Both ATI Technologies and Nvidia announced new PC core logic chipsets Tuesday in support of Advanced Micro Devices' new AM2 socket platform.

ATI announced the CrossFire Xpress 3200 chipset and the ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 chipsets, while Nvidia announced a family of 500-series nForce chipsets, all with an eye toward enthusiast PCs and Microsoft's upcoming operating system, Vista.

AMD new AM2 architecture

AMD's new AM2 architecture allows consumers and OEMs to pair the processor with the latest DDR-2 system memory, and adds virtualization to boot. For chipset vendors, the new socket infrastructure provides an ideal opportunity to refresh their own platforms, as well.

Nvidia announced four products: the nForce 590 SLI, the nForce 570 SLI, the nForce 570 Ultra, and the nForce 550. The flagship chipset, the 590, was designed "by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts," according to Tom Petersen, the technical product marketing manager for the MCP division at AMD.
