Cartoons for children are something that has been very popular for many years. As soon as animation because popular, cartoons began to spring up overnight it seems.

From Mickey Mouse to the newer super hero characters, all of them have served a purpose in the lives of children everywhere. What's more, cartoons have been made for young children and older children and of course, adults who are kids at heart.

1. The Flintstones

The Flintstones aired from 1960 to 1966 and there was only 166 episodes made during the six seasons it ran. Yet, because many kids grew up watching the show, and it was in syndication for many years, it seemed that it ran longer. Of course, later the Bam-bam and Pebbles show came as an offshoot, who were the children of the Flintstones and Rubbles, but it never captured the fame that the original Flintstones did.

If you were a child growing up in the 60's or 70's, you may still quote some of the famous quotes of show. Ask anyone, the Flintstones was truly an instant classic animated television show, that has never been compared to anything created since then.

2. The Grinch

The Grinch is an original cartoon character

 

created by Dr. Seuss in 1957, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It was in 1966 that it became a annual Christmas story and children all over the world gathered to watch the mean old Grinch try to ruin Christmas, but in the end, Christmas finally melted his heart of stone and made him into a nice and giving man.

It's a classic tale that is still aired around the holidays on many networks.

3. Popeye

Popeye was a sailor and he was first seen in a comic strip Thimble Theatre in 1929 and created by Elzie Crisler Segar. Popeye was later made into a cartoon and him and Olive Oyl made a great team as he was continually rescuing her from many scenarios once he ate his can of spinach.

In some sources Olive Oyl is Popeye's wife, but in other places she is his sweetheart and he is the adoptive father of Sweet Pea, the infant that was left on his doorstep.

4. Charlie Brown

Charlie Brown came from a comic strip from Charles M. Schulz known as Peanuts. Charlie Brown first appeared in 1950 comic strips and later became animated television series and specials for several holidays. He is depicted as a lovable loser, that always has good intentions yet he is unsure of himself and filled with insecurities.
