Promoting a safe work environment is part of the business management process. Business owners and employers have the responsibility to always provide their workers a safe environment. The workers are the company’s best non-profit asset. They are the factors in making the company’s productivity rate soaring high. The loss of an employee would also mean working hours that are lost. Thus, safety and health hazards at work should be immediately addressed.
It is now highly emphasized among business owners that their workers should be at all times protected from any dangers that their work might involve. This is for both the benefit of the company and the workers. Frequent workplace accidents would also cause the employer to pay high insurance premiums.
Employers must first acknowledge the hazards that are looming in their business façade. It involves what and where could the worker be possibly put at high risk. Usually, among the perils at work places include fire, falls, and toxic substances.
Lead, asbestos, and mercury are amongst the hazardous substances that workers usually have to deal with at the work place. Frequent exposure to asbestos could lead to a cancer called mesothelioma. It is a cancer on body cavities near the abdomen, lungs and the heart.
Electrical shock also contributes to the high mortality rate at work places. Electrical wiring should be examined regularly to avoid any electrocution incidences. Wiring should also be insulated so as to make it shock-resistant. Fire accidents could also result from highly corrosive and flammable
substances. Continuous exposure to radioactive materials is also another threat at work places. Falls are also common in workplaces especially if it deals with raised platforms and scaffolds. Employers should see to it that they are overseeing the entire condition of their workers. There should also be a written procedure of workplace safe practices. Employees should be limited to work at areas with extreme of temperatures. There is also a need to monitor workers which are dealing with hazardous materials. Those who are working at heights should be secured with construction harness. Workers who are assigned at low visibility areas should also wear reflective safety clothing. This reflective safety clothing may be in the form of fluorescent vests making workers highly visible so as to prevent any errors and injury. Alarms, signs and warnings are also very important at workplaces. There should also be a buddy system and that workers should not be allowed to work solo especially in hazardous sites. Lastly, employees should be well-trained about strict adherence to these workplace safety hazards so as to help promote a safe workplace.
