Sony's PS3: What the Cell?

Blu-ray. The Cell Processor. The RSX graphics chip.

The PS3 was supposed to be the most insanely advanced gaming machine ever created. It was supposed to be able to deliver visuals well beyond anything capable on console or PC. According to Sony, the next generation wasn't supposed to begin until PS3 arrived. 
 
So why is it, then, that all these PS3 games look just the same as they do on the Xbox 360?

Nvidia Offers Sneak Peek of Chips for Intel PCs

SAN FRANCISCO — In November, Intel Corp. and chip set maker Nvidia Corp. announced an agreement where the two would license each other's technology, a deal that was years in the making. 
 
At the Intel Developer Forum here this week, Nvidia is giving users a glimpse of what it will be offering later this spring.

Fujitsu Stakes Future of Hard Drive on HAMR

On Tuesday, hard drive and peripheral maker Fujitsu announced it had developed a multi-layer optical element for a new storage technology known as heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR). 
 
Considered by many to be the future of hard drive storage, HAMR is a technology that magnetically records data on high-stability media using laser thermal assistance—or, as it's also commonly known: heat.

Intel Looks to 'Multicore' Future

SAN FRANCISCO—By 2015, Intel may deliver processors with tens or even hundreds of individual cores, Intel researchers said Thursday at the Intel Developer Forum here.

Intel is expected to disclose on Tuesday its launch plans surrounding its next-generation Core2 microprocessors, as well as a new low-voltage Core Duo chip that will be featured in thin-and-light notebooks from Dell and HP.
Seeking to gain a bit of cachet at the Computex trade show this week, Nvidia announced the GeForce 7950 GX2 dual-GPU graphics card on Monday.
 
 By placing two GPUs on a single card, a pair of GeForce 7950 GX2s can effectively place four GPUs within the system, a nice complement to the AMD 4x4 system the company announced last week.

HP Rolls Out 100 New Products

Hewlett-Packard rolled out more than 100 new products for the home and office Wednesday, including six new printers, four digital cameras and the HP Photosmart A716 Compact Photo Printer, the first compact photo printer capable of storing over 4,000 photos. 
 

Duracell To Launch Upgraded AA Battery

Duracell said Wednesday that it will begin shipping a new line of high-capacity, rechargeable AA and AAA nickel-metal hydride batteries by the end of this month.
 
 The new batteries are designed with digital cameras in mind, as well as other electronic devices. 

WinSAT: Vista's Built-in Benchmark

Windows Vista will contain a Microsoft-embedded benchmark, known as WinSAT (Windows System Assessment Tool.) WinSAT serves several purposes:

  • It's a tool for OEM system providers to help enable them to meet Windows Vista logo requirements
  • WinSAT runs during the Vista setup procedure, to determine if the system is capable of running the Aero 3D user interface and compositing system.
Both ATI Technologies and Nvidia announced new PC core logic chipsets Tuesday in support of Advanced Micro Devices' new AM2 socket platform. 
 
ATI announced the CrossFire Xpress 3200 chipset and the ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 chipsets, while Nvidia announced a family of 500-series nForce chipsets, all with an eye toward enthusiast PCs and Microsoft's upcoming operating system, Vista.

On Wednesday, Advanced Micro Devices launched a dual-core version of its mobile Turion chip, bringing its brand of dual-core technology to thin-and-light notebooks.
 
In addition, the company said it had begun shipping a mobile Sempron chip, upgraded to include 64-bit capabilities.

Nvidia, Corsair Debut Overclocking Standard

Nvidia and Corsair Memory said Monday that they had developed an enhanced memory standard that will allow novices to overclock their systems with a high degree of confidence.

The capability will become available later this month, using the SLI-certified TWIN2X2048-6400C4 and the TWIN2X2048-8500C5 modules from Corsair as well as motherboards based on the nForce 590 SLI chipset from Nvidia.

Panasonic, Sony Develop New HD Camcorder Format

Panasonic and Sony jointly announced a new MPEG-4 digital-video-camera/recorder format on Thursday, trying to balance the demands of high-definition video with the general trend in consumer electronics toward miniaturization. 
 
The result is the new "AVCHD" format, which will allow recording and playback of high-definition 1080i and 720p video onto 8-cm DVD media, far smaller than today's conventional 120-cm DVD discs, or even the 12-cm miniature DVDs currently used for recording.
